Calton Hill manages to squeeze several attractions into a fairly small city centre space. The ancient volcanic rock is home to The City Observatory, The old Observatory, The Nelson Monument, a 15th century cannon, several further military monuments, and ‘Edinburgh’s Shame’ or ‘Edinburgh’s Folly’ – a partly finished replica of the Parthenon in Athens which became somewhat of a laughing stock when funds ran dry before it could ever be finished.
In addition, Calton Hill has amazing views of Arthurs Seat, the Salisbury Crags, Edinburgh City centre, and Leith.
On the last day of April every year, Calton Hill also hosts the ‘Beltane Fire Festival’ to a crowd of thousands. |
