Edinburgh Art FestivalWhen the Edinburgh International Festival started in 1947, it did contain exhibitions of visual art, but nothing on a major scale. Post 1960 there were many small visual arts attractions associated with the main Festival but organised by separate organisations. A campaign by the ‘Scotland on Sunday’ newspaper in 2001 highlighted the need for a dedicated visual arts festival, and hence the first Edinburgh Art Festival was organised by several galleries and was piloted in 2004. The festival has since grown into a respectable event in its own right.
